About the Artist: Carol Hanson

I was born in Florida, grew up in Virginia, and came to Massachusetts to learn how to build starships at MIT. They wanted to teach me physics and calculus instead, so I found other interests. I discovered SF fandom, and sold my very amateur art at several conventions during the 1970s, even at some WorldCons. I also found a medieval recreation group called the "Society for Creative Anachronism" (SCA). Adding artisanry to art, I played with calligraphy, costuming, needlecraft, jewelry-making, and other endeavors there and taught classes in what I'd learned, and they eventually inducted me into the Order of the Laurel, which means they think I did it very well indeed.

Recently I've been bringing the focus back to art, to something more freely imaginative and unconstrained by historic time periods. I'm also working on developing new skills and techniques through formal and informal training, and simply by trial and error. Some of the works on this site are from classes, some (the photography) is for keeping an open eye to patterns and possibilities, and some (the mixed media, especially) is a more direct reflection of my new focus. The pieces I make are still informed by my past craftsmanship and the ideas are often triggered through my love of fantasy literature, films, and even roleplaying games, but the final interpretation is my own.

Other than art? When I finished a degree in computer science from Boston University, there was no longer any plan to build starships, but there's a artistic satisfaction in well designed code, and it certainly helps pay the bills. I also enjoy music, cooking, and the occasional writing of execrable poetry or mediocre NaNoWriMo novellas. Reports of my daily life (and some excellent recipes) can be found on LiveJournal under the name "Kathryn_aka_Kat", and a more extensive collection of my artwork, with newer and older and less interesting pieces, can be found at deviantART under the name "Cimeara".

I also exist under various incarnations on Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Dreamwidth, WordPress, and Blogger/BlogSpot, but trust me, there's nothing worth seeing there.
