|About the Artist: Carol Hanson|
I was born in Florida, grew up in Virginia, and have lived in the Boston area of Massachusetts since college. (By that progression, I'll probably retire in Maine!) My degree and my day job are in technical areas, but I've always needed some form of art in my life, whether drawing, calligraphy, costuming, jewelry, photography, or something else entirely. Have I been dedicated enough, or far enough "outside the box" to count as a real artist? Maybe, maybe not. Inside the box is safe and easy, but can be cramped and stuffy. Outside the box is freeing and exhilerating, but can be unfocused and out of touch. Can we work on the border between? Let's look at the box. What can we do with it? What shape can it be, what colours, what materials? What if we make every side a lid? What if we twist it like a pretzel stick, put a tunnel through it, turn it into a Klein bottle? What if we put a heart in it, a soul, or maybe just a reflective mirror? It can still be a box in the way a sculptural basket still has elements that make it a basket. But let's make it a box like no box has been before.
