|About the Artist: Carol Hanson|
I was born in Florida, grew up in Virginia, and have been in the Boston area of Massachusetts since college. (This progression presumably means I'll retire in Maine, or Canada!) My degree and my day job are in technical areas, but I've always needed "arts & crafts" in my life, whether needlework, calligraphy, costuming, jewelry, or sketching, or photography as a somewhat quicker way to capture the art in life. So maybe I haven't been dedicated enough, or far enough "outside the box" to count as a "real" artist? Inside the box, it's sure and safe, but I find it cramped and stuffy. Outside the box is freeing and exhilerating, but can be unfocused and out of touch. More and more, I see myself on the edge of both. Let me show you the box. What can we do with it? What shape can it be, what colours, what materials? What if we make every side a lid? What if we twist it like a pretzel stick, put a tunnel through it, turn it into a Klein bottle? What if we put a heart in it, a soul, a meaning? It can still be a box, in the way a sculptural basket still has elements that make it a basket. But let's make it a box like no box has been before.
